Date: Fri, 5 Dec 2003 06:20:49 -0700 (MST) From: Bob Rozumalski Subject: New STRC WES Case: 24-25 January 2000 Greetings All Again, The SOO Science and Training Resource Center is pleased to announce the availability of a new data-only case on the National Case Study Library. The case is from the infamous 24-25 January 2000 East Coast snowstorm and is focussed over central North Carolina. Here is a summary of the case: Here is a summary: Localization: RAH (Raleigh, NC) This case follows the genesis and rapid intensification of a cyclone along the southeastern US coastline. The storm moved almost due north, affecting nearly the entire eastern seaboard. In retrospect, this storm's intensity and position were difficult for numerical models to predict accurately, posing a forecasting challenge for the impacted forecast offices. Heavy snow fell from the Carolinas, through the Washington, DC area, and into New England, with at least 5 deaths reported. Record snowfall amounts fell across North Carolina, with the Raleigh-Durham office (RDU) reporting 15 inches in 4 hours. Snowfall at RDU totaled 20.3 inches (from the evening of Jan. 24th through 3PM LST on the 25th) breaking the record for a single storm event of 17.9 inches from February 15-17, 1902. The case is available though the National Case Study Library, which is part of the SOO Science and Training Resource Center: http://strc.comet.ucar.edu +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Robert A.
