Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2004 06:54:02 -0600 (MDT) From: Bob Rozumalski Subject: Announcement: National WES case study #14 now available Hello All, I am pleased to announce yet another new addition to the National Case Study Library: http://strc.comet.ucar.edu/csl National WES case study #14 Title : 8 May 2003 Severe Hailstorm Author : Chris Buonanno - SOO/LZK Localization: LZK (Little Rock, AR) SIMULATION SUMMARY The 8 May 2003 hailstorm case offers a good training example of maintaining warnings even when no severe reports are received, as well as learning not to over warn. The objectives of this simulation are for the trainer to assess a trainee's ability to diagnose features that will contribute to severe weather potential, and to allow for an evaluation of warning techniques. This case may also be used to maintain the proficiency of warning forecasters in general. WESSL Scripts have been added to the case to display SPC watches and storm reports. EVENT SUMMARY During the early morning hours of 8 May 2003, a supercell thunderstorm moved quickly eastward across west central and central Arkansas. This storm was one of several that had formed in eastern Oklahoma along a warm front that extended into central Arkansas. Thermodynamic and wind shear profiles were supportive of supercell storms and SPC had issued a tornado watch for the area. Case #14 is available on DVD along with a companion simulation guide from the SOO/STRC National Case Study Library: http://strc.comet.ucar.edu/csl Let me know if you have any questions.
