This message is to announce the availability of the SOO/STRC Workstation Eta version 3.1. After 2 1/2 months of development and testing I'm finally ready to release the package and move on to all the requests and projects that have piled up over the past few months. Attached is the "Official" announcement that went out a few days early and describes the purpose for the SOO/STRC WS Eta. You don't need to read it unless you're a glutton for punishment. I have included new change list for WS Eta 3.1 below. The WS Eta can be found on the SOO/STRC ftp server in the worketa/version3.1 directory. This version will also be released to the university community through UNIDATA soon. A worketa.readme file is also attached so you can get started. The SOO/STRC WS Eta website has been completely updated: http://www.comet.ucar.edu/strc/model What's new for version 3.1 of the SOO/STRC WS Eta package a. The SOO/STRC WS Eta version 3.1 run-time scripts have been completely rewritten to accommodate the new data sets, file names, and directory structures used on remote data servers. You can now download files directly from the SOO/STRC 7-day running archive. The scripts are also more robust to accommodate user errors and to prevent problems during a model forecast. b. The ability to execute 1-way non-concurrent nested simulations. A Paul Wolyn request. c. The ability to assimilate high resolution Great Lakes high resolution lake surface temperatures. Critical for lake effect studies. d. Improved 30 second Land-Sea mask over North America e. NCEP Reanalysis grid support for simulating historical events going back to 1949. f. Raw model output can be processed into BUFR and/or GRIB-formatted files. BUFR stations are completely user defined. g. Additional output fields including cloud base vertical mass and fire potential. h. If a real-time model run should fail email is sent to the user stating the cause of the model failure. i. A newly updated WS Eta web site that includes a user's guide, installation and running instructions, suggested hardware for running the model, compiler resources, guidance in configuring the WS Eta model, links to WS Eta modeling studies by WFOs, and results from benchmark simulations. j. Much, much more. k. The Ws Eta can not over-state profits since the intellectual proceeds achieved by running a local area model are infinite. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. That's why I'm here. PS - Congratulations to Pete Browning, the new CR SSD Chief Bob +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Robert A.
