Benchmarking the SOO/STRC Workstation Eta

Note: A current list of current WS Eta benchmarks can be found here

1. Benchmarking: "What's in it for me?"

The purpose of running a benchmark case is to get a performance appraisal of the model on your workstation. You will also be able to compare your results to those from other systems. The results of these tests will eventually be made available on the SOO/STRC web site for others to peruse. The database is also helpful when purchasing a workstation for running the model. Here is a summary of the benchmark run:

Model run Summary
Model Configuration
Model Run : HYDROSTATIC
Grid Dimensions: 55x91 45 layers
Vertical Coord : ETA
Model Top : 25 mb
Grid Center : 41.7, -94.0
Grid Spacing : 0.098 Degrees (15km)
Model Timestep : 30 Seconds
BC Frequency : 3 Hourly

1. Ok, Uncle: So how to I benchmark my system?

The run-time scripts already come set up to run the WS Eta benchmark case. If you have a compiler, then make sure you have configured the include file for your system located in $WS_ETA/src/config. If you do not have a compiler you will need to download and install the binaries for the 55x91 computational domain for your system from the same ftp server that you obtained the SOO/STRC WS Eta.

a) Processes the benchmark data:

% eta_download.csh B

b) Run the model with the benchmark settings:

% eta_run.csh B

All that you need be be concerned with is the total amount of time require to run the WS Eta and not all the pre-processing stuff. You do not need to convert the model data but feel free to to so if you so desire.

After running the case please send the following information to the National SOO Science and Training Resource Coordinator: roz@comet.ucar.edu. That way I can include the information in the benchmark results page.

Machine platform: (Ex: HP 715/64, INTEL )
Processor speed: (Ex: 64MHz, 800MHz)
Operating System: (Ex: HPUX 10.20, Redhat 7.2)
