N-AWIPS UNIX AFOS EMULATOR PROGRAM (AFOS)
Training Exercise - (2-10-97)

GOAL: To learn about some of the features of the AFOS Program. (NOTE: If the AFOS program is currently executing, exit the program. Then start the program again, so the program uses its default settings). 1) Execute the AFOS Program by clicking on the AFOS icon. The AFOS window will appear. 2) Select and display a text product. a) Click on TEXT (top left), and while holding down the left mouse button, move the cursor to TEXT and release the button (or while holding down the CONTROL key, press the T letter on the keyboard). b) Click on the scroll bar in the SELECT TEXT FILE CATEGORY window (upper right) and scroll through the list of categories until the CAC_DISCUSSIONS category is displayed in the window, and then click on it. c) Click on the NMCEONUS product in the Product Listing window that appears below the previous window. The 6- To 10- Day Forecast will appear in a window on the left. 3) Select and display (overlay) another text product onto the previous text product. a) Click on the REPLACE MODE toggle button located under the words TOGGLE SWITCHES (at top) to change the mode to OVERLAY MODE. b) Click on the CODED_CITIES category in the SELECT TEXT FILE CATEGORY window. c) Click on the scroll bar in the PRODUCT LISTING window and scroll through the list of categories until the MEMCCFMEM product is displayed in the window, and then click on it. The Coded Cities Forecast from WSFO Memphis will appear at the top of the window on the left, with the previous product displayed below it. 4) Let's select and display a single AFOS graphic, zoom in and out on the graphic, display a couple of additional graphics, and finally overlay a graphic. a) Click on QUIT (lower right) to clear the screen. b) With cursor in the display area, click the right mouse button. c) Click on the scroll bar in the SELECT GRAPHIC CATEGORY window (left side of screen) and scroll through the list of categories until the ALL_ETA_CHARTS category is displayed in the window, and then click on it. NOTE: Be patient, as the products that will appear in the SELECT GRAPHIC PRODUCT window below will not be immediate. d) Click on the NMCGPH024 product in the SELECT GRAPHIC PRODUCT window. The 12-hr Mean Sea Level Pressure forecast graphic will appear in the AFOS window. e) To zoom in on the graphic, move the cursor into the display area. Click the left mouse button and while holding it down, draw a rubber band box around the area you want to zoom in on and release the button. f) Click on CONTROL (top left) and while holding down the left mouse button, move the cursor to ZOOM IN and release the button (or while holding down the CONTROL key, press the Z letter on the keyboard). g) Click on CONTROL (top left) and while holding down the left mouse button, move the cursor to ZOOM OUT and release the button (or while holding down the ALTERNATE key, press the Z letter on the keyboard). h) To display additional graphics, click on the NMCGPH044 product, then on NMCGPH064, and finally click on the NMCGPH084. These products will be displayed in the AFOS window as they are selected. i) To overlay a graphic, click on the NMCGPH024 product again. Now click on the OVERLAY button located just below the SELECT GRAPHIC PRODUCT window, and then select the NMCGPH064 product to overlay it onto the previous product. j) Remove the smaller window on the left by moving the cursor into the display area and clicking the right mouse button. 5) Finally, let's select a loop animation rate and animate some AFOS graphics. a) To clear the screen, click on CONTROL (top line), and while holding down the left mouse button, move the cursor to RESTORE and release the button (or while holding down the CONTROL key, press the R letter on the keyboard). b) Click on LOOP (top left) and while holding down the left mouse button, move the cursor to ANIMATE RATE and release the button. In the window that appears (upper left), click on the slider bar and move it to the far left to change the pause between frames to 0.5 second. Then click on SAVE and then on CLOSE. c) Click on LOOP (top left) and while holding down the left mouse button, move the cursor to LOOPS and release the button. d) Click on AVN_500MB_PROG_LOOP. A loop displaying the initial 500 mb height analysis (00-hr) and forecasts out through 132 hours will display 5 times and then stop. 6) Exit the AFOS Program. a) Click on CONTROL (top left). b) Click on QUIT in the window that appears.
