N-AWIPS Satellite / Radar Display and Animation Program (NSAT)
Training Exercise

GOAL: To learn about some of the features of the NSAT Program. (NOTE: If the NSAT program is currently executing, exit the program and then start the program again so the program uses its default settings). 1) Execute the NSAT Program by clicking on the NSAT icon. 2) When the NSAT window appears, move the cursor into the display area and click the right mouse button. 3) Select, load and loop a series of images. a) Click on the GOES-8 button under DATA SOURCE (at top). b) Click on 4KM button under DATA SCALE. c) Click on the IR button under PRODUCT TYPES. d) In the PRODUCTS AVAILABLE window that appears, click on one of the older images, and while holding down the left mouse button, move the cursor to the most current image (always located at the bottom) and release the button. e) Now click on LOAD IMAGES to load the images for display. NOTE: While the images are loading the mouse cursor will be an "X" instead of the usual arrow. f) Animate the images by clicking on the double right pointing arrow located in the upper right part of the screen. 4) Let's change the rate of animation. a) One must first stop the loop by clicking on the double right pointing arrow. b) Click on OPTION located at the top of the NSAT window, and then click on DWELL RATE in the window that pops up (or while holding down the CONTROL key, press the D letter on the keyboard). c) In the window that appears, set the pause at the beginning of the loop by clicking on the FIRST slider bar. While holding down the left mouse button, move the bar right or left until the value in the box on the right displays from 0.5 to 1 second (0.50 to 1.00), and then release the button. d) Set the pause at the end of the loop by clicking on the LAST slider bar. Continue using the same steps as before, and also use from 0.5 to 1 second for the pause. e) Finally, set the pause between images by cicking on the INTERMEDIATE slider button. Continue using the same steps as before, but this time use a value of around 0.2 second (0.20). f) Click on CLOSE and then click on the double right pointing arrow to begin the animation again. 5) Finally, let's add the county outlines to the map background and also change the enhancement used for displaying the satellite images. a) Stop the loop by clicking on the double right pointing arrow. b) Click on OPTION and then click on PREFERENCES (or while holding down the CONTROL key, press the P letter on the keyboard). c) Click on the COUNTY button (at center). Then close this window and apply the county map resolution by clicking on APPLY. NOTE: The county map outlines will not appear until you reselect the images. d) With the cursor in the display area, click the right mouse button. e) Click on the GOES-8 button under DATA SOURCE. f) Click on 4KM button under DATA SCALE. g) Click on the IR button under PRODUCT TYPES. h) In the PRODUCTS AVAILABLE window that appears, click on one of the older images, and while holding down the left mouse button, move the cursor to the most current image (always located at the bottom) and release the button. i) Click on LOAD IMAGES to load the images for display. NOTE: While the images are loading the mouse cursor will be an "X" instead of the usual arrow. j) Now to change the enhancement, click on OPTION again, then click on COLOR ENHANCEMENT (or while holding down the CONTROL key, press the E letter on the keyboard). k) Click on any of the enhancements available, then click on CLOSE. l) Animate the images by clicking on the double right pointing arrow located in the upper right part of the screen. 6) Exit the NSAT Program. a) Click on EXIT located at the top of the NSAT window. b) Confirm that you want to quit the program by clicking on OK in the EXIT CONFIRMATION window.
