 Supported Software Packages

Modsnd
The operational Model Sounding package processes BUFR formatted model profile data and outputs the data in formats compatible with BUFKIT, NAWIPS, and NSharp.

Gribmaster
Gribmaster is a collection of scripts that allow the user to select, download, and process operational and non-operational model datasets on the OOS and NCEP ftp servers. Gribmaster can also be configured to access data from any regional FTP server. The data may then be converted into GEMPAK format for viewing in NAWIPS, shipped off to AWIPS, or processed for some other use such as PC grids.

Weather Event Simulator (WES)
The Weather Event Simulator (WES) was developed for simulated displaced real-time training at the National Weather Service forecasts offices.

SOO/STRC Workstation Eta
The Science Operations Officer/Science and Training Resource Center (SOO/STRC) version of the workstation (WS) Eta model was developed as a means of providing Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) guidance to National Weather Service (NWS) and River Forecast Center (RFC) forecasters at temporal and spatial scales not available from operational data sources.

NAWIPS/GEMPAK
GEMPAK & NAWIPS software information including README files, script information, background info on GEMPAK, links to Unidata's GEMPAK Home Page and the string-searchable Q&A archive, and links to other GEMPAK-related Home Pages.

GARP
An X Windows/Motif software application designed by COMET for the display and analysis of meteorological data sets. Supported data sets include model data like the Eta, NGM and RUC, Satellite imagery in NOAAPort GINI format or MCIDAS area file format, NIDS and Nowrad radar data, surface data and upper air data.

LINUX D2D/DRT
The Displaced Real-Time (DRT) version of the AWIPS software package for the LINUX operating system was developed to provide a quasi-operation environment in which to conduct office training.

 

Unsupported but still loved Software Packages

BUFKIT
BUFKIT is a forecast profile visualization and analysis tool kit developed by the staff at the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Buffalo and Ed Mahoney at WDTB for use with the Eta, WS Eta, AVN NGM, and RUC forecast profiles (BUFR files) located on the NCEP, OOS, and STRC ftp servers.

LDM
The Unidata Local Data Manager (LDM) is a collection of cooperating programs that select, capture, manage, and distribute meteorological data products. Notice: LDM requires that the scripting language Perl be installed on your system.

Perl
Perl is a high-level programming language. It derives from the ubiquitous C programming language and is particularly well-suited for tasks involving quick prototyping, system utilities, software tools, system management tasks, database access, graphical programming, networking, and world wide web programming.

Vis5D
Vis5D is a system for interactive visualization of large 5-D gridded data sets such as those created by numeric weather models. Vis5D was written by the Visualization Project at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) by Bill Hibbard and Brian Paul. To convert GEMPAK diagnostic grids to Vis5D format, use the GEMVIS software.

VisAD
VisAD is a Java component library for interactive and collaborative visualization and analysis of numerical data. The name VisAD is an acronym for "Visualization for Algorithm Development".

McIDAS
McIDAS (Man computer Interactive Data Access System), under development since 1970 at the Space Science and Engineering Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a sophisticated, video interactive set of tools for acquiring, managing, analyzing, displaying and integrating environmental data.

WATADS
WATADS (WSR-88D Algorithm Testing And Display System) is an X-Windows based UNIX software tool available to NWS SOOs and their university collaborators. Note that WATADS is not available for the LINUX platform.

GrADS
The Grid Analysis and Display System (GrADS) is an interactive desktop tool that is used for easy access, manipulation, and visualization of earth science data. GrADS has been implemented worldwide on a variety of commonly used operating systems

Wgrib
WGRIB is a program to manipulate, inventory and decode GRIB files. A very useful tool for viewing the information in NCEP and OSO data files. LINUX and HPUX binaries are available on the SOO/STRC ftp server in the contrib directory.

Tcl/Tk
TCL/TK is a programming system developed by John Ousterhout at the University of California, Berkeley, which is easy to use, and which has very useful graphical interface facilities. TCL is the basic programming language, while TK is a ToolKit of widgets, which are graphical objects similar to those of other GUI toolkits, such as Xlib, Xview and Motif.

Java
Java is an increasingly popular Object-Oriented (O-O) programming language developed at SUN and available on most computer platforms. Java is extensively used to develop web-based applications (applets) and is becoming more widely used in traditional programming. Java is an interpreted language, meaning that routines compiled on one platform are completely portable to other computer platforms without the need for recompilation.

Imagemagick
ImageMagick is a robust collection of tools and libraries to read, write, and manipulate an image in many image formats (over 68 major formats) including popular formats like TIFF, JPEG, PNG, PDF, PhotoCD, and GIF. With ImageMagick you can create images dynamically, making it suitable for Web applications. You can also resize, rotate, sharpen, color reduce, or add special effects to an image and save your completed working the same or differing image format. Image processing operations are available from the command line, as well as through C, C++, and PERL-based programming interfaces.
